I will preface this with the note that I have worked with -and cleaned- many a gun: the scent is not bad, but not like gun oil at all... much more like bubble gum.

not exactly accurate, but reminds me strongly of when my father would clean guns at the table when i was young. a bit oversweet, medicinal cough-syrup and strong solvent. on the skin, it starts to smell a bit like bubblegum, and eventually winds up with a cumin base....

SOS used in soy wax candles. This missed the mark as gun oil. It has a metallic undertone but is missing the bite you get from Hoppes.

Haven't smelled Hoppes gun oil for years, so I can't comment on that, but I can remark on what I did smell. I got the sniffy as I'm looking for a good metallic note for perfume-blending. With this, I smell machine oil, dirt and buffing agent. It's not unlike silver polish, actually. As it dries, it develops a definite licorice waft and loses the sharper edges. I will have to see what it smells like with rose. It is fairly perfume-y at the end, losing the wonderful industrial notes, but I think it might mix well. I like it very much, but have taken a star off for not reminding me gun-cleaning....

Nothing like hoppe's - maybe antifreeze, but it completely lacks the bite of kerosene that hoppes is based on. Not a terrible scent just don't get this for a gun enthusiast!

This one is amusing. It actually DOES smell like Hoppes 9 gun oil, so close that my father, smelling it, named it immediately. It's a bit sharp to use on it's own, perhaps, but it has a sweet metallic quality that would make a wonderful blender for male scents....
