The subtle nuances and smooth, deep aromas of this beguiling class is used very often in perfumery base notes to intrique, evoke, provoke and seduce. Oddly, however the origins of this aromatic substance are sometimes from animalic sources, glandular secretions of the musk deer, the civet, muscrat, ducks and even crododiles! It can also be derived from plants or florals which emit musky undertones. While some would initially say, "Eww!", it is used widely in nearly all fragrances even in small amounts, sometimes simply as a fixative. Of course, natural musk is now not allowed because of animal safety, so synthetic counterparts are exclusively used to emulate the provacative character of this very popular note. Some popular fragrances that utilize this component are Coty's Wild Musk, The Body Shop Japanese Musk, Nariciso Rodriguez for Women, White Musk, Lovely SJP, White Musk and countless others. |
